ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Here we look at hyperactivity, impulsivity and concentration problems in children.

It is vitally important to evaluate the individual nutritional needs of hyperactive children. By identifying foods and additives that trigger this behaviour, one can most times eliminate the need for the use of drugs, which in some cases can be potentially harmful. The ultimate goal is for the child to attain their full potential. It is sad when an individual’s possibility to star is obscured or stunted.

Children with ADHD tend to become “labelled”. Eventually they begin to live up to the negative expectations of the desperate parents and teachers who have the daunting task of trying to control them. Their peers can also find them hard to get along with. By sensibly assessing treatment, a sense of responsibility and control is regained.

Although much is written on this subject, it is sometimes difficult for a parent to know where to begin. What foods should I cut out of my child’s diet? What supplements should I be giving and in what dosage? Should my child be taking a prescription drug?

At Eagle Clinic we aim to answer these questions for you, but not in general terms. Rather the information is applied to the unique individual according to what is found during their assessment. There is a great deal of published evidence to support nutritional management in the first line of management. Clinical experience indicates that behaviour and learning ability improve significantly after the initiation of treatment based on individual assessment.

Nutritional management need not be an ‘all or nothing’ approach. It can be used alongside the use of drugs, helping to improve overall health and well-being.

We assess:

  1. Which foods may be causing an intolerance or allergy
  2. Which additives may be triggering behavioural problems
  3. Which nutrients are lacking

Common foods such as wheat, dairy products, raisins and orange juice are often found to cause problems. Additives such as artificial colours (e.g. E102-133), artificial flavouring agents (e.g. monosodium glutamate E621), artificial sweetener (aspartame), preservatives (e.g. sodium benzoate E210-219) and the nitrates (E249-251) are generally found in processed foods, medicines and sweets. They have no nutrient value whatsoever, yet can cause classical symptoms. In most cases there is a need (which is assessed) for antioxidants, vitamins (especially B6), minerals (e.g. magnesium, zinc), trace minerals and essential fatty acids (especially omega-3).

We also assess the health of the gastro-intestinal tract. There may be a need for nutrients to heal a ‘leaky’ gut, the use of probiotics (healthy bacteria), the eradication of yeast organisms such as Candida and protozoal parasites.

Where indicated by a positive family history (e.g. migraines, asthma, eczema), foods that can be considered inhibitors of a particular enzyme called PST (amines, flavonoids and salicylates) are excluded from the child’s diet.

By the end of the assessment a well balanced diet is ensured.

We hope we have the opportunity of working with you to achieve a happy child, capable of attaining the full joy of their potential.
