Thyroid Hormone Testing
Many people are told that their thyroid function test is normal, even though the actual thyroid output is inadequate. This is because very often only the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which comes from the pituitary gland, is measured. The thyroid itself produces T4 (thyroxine), which is then converted to the active form, T3. It is better to measure all these hormones in order to get a better picture of thyroid function. In order to have this tested accurately, patients have to either attend a laboratory or send plasma directly to a laboratory.
